Writer vitamins

Learning, networking, and receiving feedback are what I use to boost inspiration and motivation as a writer. That's why I'm headed to Decatur, GA in March for the SCBWI Southern Breeze spring conference.

Spring 2025 Mingle SCBWI Southern Breeze Annual Conference

I'm a member of the SCBWI Carolinas region. I love our regional events. Each time I go, it's like a B-12 shot to the creative side of my brain. Writer vitamins! So when one of my SCBWI Carolinas friends encouraged me to expand my horizons and look into our neighboring region's event, I did. When registration opened, I jumped on board.

Hanging out with like-minded writers is great for self-validation in an industry fraught with rejection. For example, I submitted a picture book manuscript to an agent who requested it based on a pitch last fall. The request felt great. The radio silence indicating it was a pass was painful. But that's how the writing industry works. We get rejected, pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and get more feedback. Then we edit. Tweak. Rewrite. We start new things. We come back to the old things and rework them.

Then, we register for a brand new writer's conference. Retreat. Mingle. Once we get that registration confirmation in our inbox, there's hope. Hope we'll garner more nuggets of wisdom that will move us forward on our writing journeys. Hope we'll spark new ideas and new friendships. Hope we'll find the support and validation we need to press on.

Hope, as the children we write for already know, is a boost to our systems. It's the multivitamin that helps us bounce back and move forward with excitement. It gives us renewed energy and focus.

Since the summer of 2018 when the inspiration hit for my first middle-grade novel, I've been on a regular diet of writer vitamins. I attend several writing conferences, retreats, and events each year, keep in touch with my writing friends, and intentionally fan the flames of hope and inspiration.
